Wednesday was my fifth anniversary of dating Lisa. It's amazing to think that the this picture (the first extant shot of us together) was ~5 years ago.
We didn't do a getaway this year like we did last year, because the anniversary was mid-week, and we're both busy. But I surprised her. I told her we were doing a nice dinner and "something fun" afterwards, but she had no idea what to expect.
Before the date even got going, I welcomed her home from work with a really nice bouquet of flowers. She enjoyed them for a moment before I asked her if she "noticed anything funny about them". She then figured out they were fake flowers. She'd mentioned that one of the downsides of having a cat was that it's hard to have fresh flowers in the house, so I thought I'd track down some really nice fake ones, and it turns out there are silk flowers these days that are really well made.
We get dressed and I tell the cab driver an address that's a block away from our dinner destination. I had to do this, because we were eating at #9 Park, so she'd have known right away if she heard. Lisa had always wanted to dine here, but I'd always said it would need to be a very special occasion, Well, this was that occasion.
The restaurant is pricey, but they treat you SO well. I'd compare it to Gary Danko in San Francisco. Small. Not too flashy. Delightful, attentive, and helpful service. and food pairings I couldn't have dreamed up, but cherished every bite. The wine list is so long that they have a separate little cheat sheet for people who are intimidated. That cracked me up. Lisa got a prune gnocchi appetizer served over foie gras that the waiter boldly proclaimed is the best dish on any menu in all of Boston. At the end of the meal, the waiter told us we could keep the beautiful flowers on our table, and that they'd refrigerate them for us while we enjoyed the rest of our night. Especially impressive, considering Lisa said the flowers probably retail for half of the cost of the entire meal.
We then hit up Blue Man Group. I'd seen it twice before, but knew she was curious from what she'd heard. We were a little tipsy from the wine at dinner, which was perfect because the crowd was young (average age of 15) and rowdy. I love performance percussion, like Stomp or even street performers, so I was in heaven. Lisa pointed out that a lot of the humor in the show was based around the performers doing the silliest things, but with deadly straight faces, and that this is how our cat cracks us up too. She's so right.
Anyway, the night was a success. We laughed a lot, ate a great meal, and had fun talking about the great past and the potential for the future. Everything you want from an anniversary.
